Relegation-threatened Sunderland announce the departure of manager Gus Poyet after 18 months in charge.

Sunderland have confirmed the sacking of manager Gus Poyet.

The 46-year-old joined the club in October 2013, but a string of disappointing results this season have seen him exit the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats, who have won just four games during the current Premier League campaign, are one point above the relegation zone.

Poyet's future on Wearside came under increased scrutiny on Saturday after the team's 4-0 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Aston Villa.

Former Rangers and Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat is understood to be among the main contenders to replace the Uruguayan, while West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce has also been linked with the role.

Poyet, who signed a two-year contract extension in May 2014, guided Sunderland to the League Cup final and dramatically secured their Premier League status during his first season in charge. However, the team has failed to make any notable progress this term.

"I would like to thank Gus for his endeavours during his time at the club, in particular last season's 'great escape' and cup final appearance, which will live long in the memory of every Sunderland fan," chairman Ellis Short told the club's official website.

"Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season and we find ourselves battling, once again, at the wrong end of the table. We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed."

Sunderland are back in action on Saturday when they face West Ham United at Upton Park in the league.
